Dutch-born flutist, LUCIE JONES keeps a hectic schedule of performing and teaching. Principal flute with the Red Deer Symphony, an extra player with the Calgary Philharmonic, busy freelance and chamber musician, a full teaching studio at MRU and director of three flute choirs keeps the schedule packed. As a founding member and President of the Flute Club of Calgary, Lucie’s board work fills the rest of her time.
Aura Pon, Oboe
People often say playing the oboe is a difficult activity, but AURA PON has combined active performing, often with the Calgary Philharmonic, Symphony of the Kootenays, and others, with a varied life; of musical research, experiments with musical electronics, composing, even serving as a Naval Reserve officer! She generated a number of news headlines as the inventor of the Woomba, a prenatal musical instrument.
Ilana Dahl, Clarinet
Armed with two University music degrees, ILANA DAHL has been a stalwart of the Calgary music scene for more than two decades. Whether it is showing off the latest in classical composers with the Land’s End Ensemble, or playing classic masterworks with the CPO or her regular chair as principal clarinet of the Red Deer Symphony, she has shown she is ready for anything. Offstage, she is licensed as a Realtor, which means she can tell you whether breaking down that wall in your house really is a good idea or not.
Daryl Caswell, Horn
As an engineer and teacher, Daryl created and ran design programs for the Schulich School of Engineering as a long-time faculty member at UCalgary. At the same time, he did research and development work in music acoustics. He has created new instruments (bell plates), sound reflection systems for concert halls as well as tools for the music industry, like horn mutes and reed knives. His musical instrument repair business is housed in a minibus, allowing him to fix things up anywhere. He is a square dancer, knows how to play the Alphorn, and has been performing for over 50 years!
Jonathan Gresl, Bassoon
Jonathan Gresl is dedicated to bringing new life into his ancient and strange instrument. He has enjoyed playing the bassoon the bassoon in a variety of contexts, from great orchestral music to to brand new expiremental compositions. He even once wrote and performed “The Stars and Stripes forever” with 12 other bassoonists! He can been seen in Calgary with many groups, including the Alberta Winds and Red Deer Symphony. He is currently principal bassoon of the Symphony of the Kootenays.
